Welcome to a New Academic Season at GABC

September 5, 2017 by Michael Rawlins

New GABC President’s 2017 Welcome Message

To the ABC Scholars, Parents and Host Families — welcome to another academic year. I look forward to another great year.

For the new scholars, their parents and the Glastonbury community – allow me to introduce myself. I’m Michael Rawlins, new President of Glastonbury ABC. On behalf of the board welcome to a truly enriching and wonderful program. As you partake in all of the activities and opportunities, I want to impart three important things:
  • the community of Glastonbury embraces this wonderful program – devoting time, resources and financial support. Support spans from former Glastonbury High School graduating classes, countless individual donators, clubs & groups — to a core group of dedicated volunteers who serve on the ABC board. Welcome to Glastonbury!
  • as you get to know your house mates and RD’s – we ask you to “dream big” about your academic futures and lives. Aim high and work diligently.
  • and lastly, embrace the traditions of the ABC house. We have enjoyed so many success stories from our current scholars and our graduates. Take their energy and make it your own. Leverage the generosity of your host families and reciprocate by being engaged and passionate about all that you experience.
To our outgoing President, Bonnie Clark — I have been inspired and in awe of your accomplishments in your tenure as President. You have provided clear, thoughtful a leadership, resulting in our scholars leaving the program to attend great academic institutions with a solid sense of community and work ethic. It’s been with your leadership that we continue to draw sponsorship donations and the unflinching dedication of the board members. Collectively, the board looks forward to your new “special project” role on the board.

To outgoing board members & host family parents — your efforts have been stellar, selfless and wonderful to this program. A special and heartfelt thank you to Joan & Tom Faustman for their years of service and generosity. All of you will always be part of this program and all the lives of those you’ve supported and enriched.

To our donors and loyal supporters — your generous donations to this program (which is 100% funded through private donations) has been so valued over the program’s 44 year run.  Like most non-profits in 2017, we strive to share our proof points (like our graduation rate, and the quality of schools where these scholars are gaining acceptance.)  The board also strives to be frugal and discerning with our financial decisions. We invite the community to become involved with the program by meeting the scholars and the board members. Please feel free to contact me to facilitate an engagement.

Best Regards,
Michael Rawlins
